Punta San Jose, Baja Norte

True Baja Surfing begins south of Ensenada. Punta San Jose, a series of reef breaks that becomes one sweeping right when a swell fires, but even on smaller swells there are racy right sections. The winds are usually offshore at Punta San Jose, but the kelp beds and the high cliffs keep it from getting to blown out. There are fresh lobster and camping at Punta San Jose.

Surfers advice:  Punta San Jose is best on a South or a huge West.

Getting there: To get there it is best to go with either a guide or someone who has been there before, drive south from Ensenada through the Santo Tomas wine-growing valley. Twenty-nine miles beyond Ensenada, turn west onto a dirt road at the town of Santo Tomas. A couple miles down the road bear right at the fork, then keep driving till you see the lighthouse.
