Mushrooms, Baja Norte
Mushrooms is a small cove just north of Calafia
that has a hollow and rippable right hander. It is a fairly short wave but
really fun when it is on. Mushrooms breaks best on a big south swell but can
also get good on a sizable southwest. The takeoff zone is right next to the
rocks so it can get sketchy. Mushrooms is for experienced surfers only because
of the tricky takeoff zone. In recent months a high-rise condo has begun
construction just in front of the cove here. Upon completion, access might be
blocked entirely to the public so get out there while you still can!
Surfers
advice:
Use
caution during the winter months, as north swells can push sewage from the
treatment plant a few kilometers north of here, giving the water a grayish
tint and a not so pleasant smell.
.
Getting there:
To get to Mushrooms, take the toll road past Rosarito and exit onto the free road just
before the AM/PM gas station. You will pass Fox Studios Baja on your right and
condo towers will be ahead of you along the coast. Mushrooms is right in front
of the second tower from the north. Parking can be tricky with all of the
construction, so make sure to ask before you park. Pay a local a couple bucks
to watch your car if you can.
