The Presidency of Manuel Gonzalez

November 30, 1880. General Porfirio Diaz ended his first term of office and handed over to General Manuel Gonzalez.

December 1, 1884. General Porfirio Diaz was elected president for a second time. In following years the Constitution would be amended again, annulling the principle of no re-election. Porfirio Diaz remained president of Mexico for six consecutive terms until he was forced to resign in 1911.

July 8, 1893. Border treaties were signed with the British possession of Belize (British Honduras).

The mining engineer Camilo Arriaga founded the Mexican Liberal Party in San Luis Potosi on February 5, 1901.

February 5, 1901. The Mayas of the Yucatan peninsula were defeated by government troops in the town of Chan Santa Cruz, Quintana Roo, ending the War of the Castes.

August 31, 1901. The Yaqui and Mayo Indians of Sonora were finally brought under control by the federal army after many years of hard fighting that had begun in 1867.

June 1, 1906. The Mexican workers of Greene's Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Sonora went on strike. The strike was broken with the help of Arizona Rangers.

January 7, 1907. An important strike broke out, this time in the textile mills of Rio Blanco, The workers were harshly repressed by federal troops.

April 1908. Francisco 1. Madero published his book The Presidential Succession in 1910, which produced a real political upheaval in the country.

March 25, 1909. The AntiRe-electionist Center was founded. At their first convention the delegates nominated Madero for the presidency. The electoral campaign began on June 18.
