Dictatorship of Santa Anna

The revolution of the Hospicio Plan triumphed and Santa Anna was made president of Mexico -for the eleventh time. He was named Dictator in Perpetuity and his official designation was changed to His Most Serene Highness on November 17, 1853.

December 13, 1853. Santa Anna sold the U.S.A. some 30,000 square miles of territory known as the Mesilla Valley

h-47 march 1854.GIF (3001 bytes)By March 1, 1854, Santa Anna's dictatorship had become intolerable and Colonel Florencio Villarreal published the Ayutla Plan (Ayutla, Guerrero). This withdrew recognition of Santa Anna and appointed General Juan Alvarez provisional president, who would call elections.

July 1, 1854. The French filibuster, Rousset de Boulbon took the port of Guaymas with the idea of separating the State of Sonora from the Republic. He was defeated by Colonel Jose Maria Yanez, who had him shot by a firing squad.

October 4, 1854. General Alvarez was recognized as provisional president of Mexico at Cuernavaca, Morelos.

Defeated by the Ayutla Revolution, Santa Anna abandoned the capital on August 9, 1855 and went into exile for the last time.
