The First Republic

May 30, 1823. The Supreme Executive Power was named to exercise the Provisional Government of Mexico.

July 1, 1823. The Central American provinces, with the exception of Chiapas, seceded from Mexico.

Agustin de Iturbide, unaware that there existed a decree sentencing him to death if he returned to Mexico, landed at Soto la Marina, Tamaulipas. He was apprehended and tried by the local state legislature, which had him shot at the tiny settlement of Padilla on July 19, 1824.

October 4, 1824. The first Constitution ofh-40 victoria.GIF (2612 bytes) Mexico was promulgated, establishing a system that was republican, representative, popular and federal.

October 10, 1824. General Guadalupe Victoria became the first president of the Republic.

November 23, 1825. The Spanish garrison that was entrenched in the Castle of San Juan de Ulua in Veracruz left this last bastion that Spain had kept in Mexico after Independence.

December 20, 1827. It was decreed that the Spaniards should be expelled, accused of taking part in the plot of the priest Joaquin Arenas to bring Mexico back under Spanish rule.

November 30, 1828. The troops billeted in the old building of the Acordada revolted to put General Vicente Guerrero in the presidency.

September 11, 1829. General Isidro Barradas, leader of the military expedition that Spain had sent to reconquer Mexico, surrendered at Tampico, Tamaulipas.

December 4, 1829. General Anastasio Bustamanteh-42 bustamante.GIF (2528 bytes) proclaimed the Jalapa Plan, repudiating General Vicente Guerrero as president.

December 16, 1829. Guerrero stepped down from presidential office and staged an armed revolt in the mountains of southern Mexico.

In January 1831. Bustamante's government bought the services of the Genoese sea cah-43 santa anna.GIF (1594 bytes)ptain, Francesco Picalagua to take Guerrero prisoner and hand him over at Huatulco, Oaxaca.

February 14, 1831. General Vicente Guerrero faced a firing squad at Cuilapan.

Under the Cuernavaca Plan, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president on May 23, 1834.
