Iturbide's Empire
October 8, 1821. Juan O' Donojo, the last viceroy of New Spain, died in Mexico City. January 8, 1822. All the countries of Central America joined the Mexican Empire. February 24, 1822. The Constituent Congress was instated. May 9, 1822. Agustin de Iturbide was named Emperor of Mexico and crowned in the metropolitan cathedral on July 21. October 31, 1822. Emperor Iturbide dissolved Congress. December 2, 1822. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna declared himself in revolt at Jalapa, demanding the reinstatement of the Republic. Generals Cortazar, Echavarri and Lobato, both commanders of Iturbide's troops, joined Santa Anna, proclaiming the Casa Mata Plan on February 1, 1823. In this they withdrew recognition of Agustin de Iturbide. The Emperor was later exiled to Italy. |
