For the most part, fuel must be paid for in cash, and it’s always best to have Mexican currency on hand. There are some stations closer to the border that will take US dollars, but pesos are by far the preferred payment. While things are getting better and better, you should still always be conscious of criminals working the fuel stations. Stations in or near the border towns are most likely to attract thieves. For starters, make sure the pump is set to zero before you or the attendant starts pumping. Sad but true, this kind of gas and oil overcharging is pretty common, especially with teenaged males. And kids who hang around stations to wash windshields and fill your tires are notoriously sticky fingered. When stopping at la gasolinera, keep your things secured.
